3/26/20 - Soft on Crime Policies
Soft-on-crime policies invariably lead to a spike in crime. This dynamic is especially important now that a number of radical soft-on-crime prosecutors have been elected around the country. Here are some of the stories in the news, recently:
Mayor Bill de Blasio admitted that a new bail reform law has caused crime rates to go up in New York City since the first of the year. The heavily criticized law prevents judges from setting bail in most misdemeanor and nonviolent felony cases. New York Post
Defendants let out under New York City’s no-bail law include a hate crime suspect who attacked a fourth woman after being released following an arrest for attacking 3 Jewish women. Another defendant, an alleged bank robber, apparently robbed a fifth bank after being let out for robbing 4 banks. No gun was used, so he was released under the new law. He reportedly said: “I can’t believe they let me out. What were they thinking?” Indeed. BizPac Review
The homicide rates in several cities have gone up under progressive social reform DAs. Philadelphia’s is the highest in over a decade and violent crime there is up 5 percent overall. Epoch Times
A radical soft-on-crime prosecutor in St. Louis refused to charge a suspect who confessed to shooting a 7-year-old boy. The prosecutor claimed she could not determine who was responsible for the child’s death despite the confession. This prosecutor took campaign funds from the soft-on-crime movement and had two dozen attorneys quit the prosecutor’s office after she was elected. Gateway Pundit
A few years ago, California reduced the penalties for shoplifting. Subsequently, the number of “mass grab and dash” thefts steadily increased. These organized thefts involve large numbers of people entering a store at the same time, taking what they want, and fleeing. Hot Air
Despite what some believe, 60 percent of inmates are in state prisons for violent crimes or weapons offenses, including murder, rape, assault, robbery, and burglary. This is four times the number convicted only of drug offenses. Manhattan Institute
1/16/20 - Environmental Issues
Things are not always as people are led to believe on environmental issues. Here are some recent examples:
A recent test showed electric cars perform poorly in cold weather. The range drops considerably, sometimes by half. Disclose.tv
Tesla car batteries release as much CO2 as 8 years of gasoline driving when the manufacturing production process is taken into account, according to a study commissioned by the Swedish government. Watts Up With That
Wind turbines only have a 20-year useful life and cost more than half a million dollars each to decommission. Center of the American Experiment
A seven-month investigation showed the addition of solar power to a state’s power grid could increase pollution because constant starting and stopping to accommodate solar supply makes regular power plants less efficient. North State Journal
A government-subsidized thermal solar plant in central Nevada has been a complete failure. It has suffered constant breakdowns. The electricity generated cost 6 times as much, and now its electricity contracts have been canceled. American Thinker
Plastic straws only constitute 1 percent of all the plastic entering the oceans each year, according to one estimate. Abandoned fishing equipment is a far bigger problem. Heritage Foundation
Despite wild claims the earth will burn up in 12 years, hundreds of scientific papers show there has been no unusual global warming in the modern era and the well-known two-decade long “pause” in supposed global warming continues today. NoTricksZone GodFatherPolitics
Staying in the Paris climate agreement would have cost U.S. families $20,000 a year each and done little to alter the climate. Daily Signal
Despite claims to the contrary, there is no reliable evidence at this time that global warming has caused hurricanes to become worse, according to the federal agency NOAA. American Thinker
Clean energy subsidies are regressive, benefitting investment bankers, hedge funds, property owners, and other well-off people, not the poor. The Economic Standard
The Green New Deal will hurt the environment because fossil fuel production will shift to other places in the world with lower environmental standards, landfill and waste streams from toxic renewables will get larger, and huge acreage will be lost to wind and solar installations. Daily Signal
A zoologist was fired from a Canadian University after her research showed the polar bear population is thriving in the Arctic, not plummeting as many believe. Washington Times
